The Journey of Foday Kabba: From Sierra Leone to the United States

Foday Kabba's life began in Sierra Leone, but due to the Civil War, his family moved to The Gambia before eventually immigrating to the United States when he was just twelve years old. This transition was not easy; uprooting from a familiar environment during formative teenage years can be daunting. However, soccer became a vital lifeline for Foday, helping him adapt and build connections in his new home. Through soccer, he found a community that supported him, allowing him to flourish both socially and academically.

After completing his education at Gonzaga University, where he also played soccer, Foday worked in the private sector for several years. Despite his professional success, he felt a calling to give back to his roots in Africa. Each trip back home reinforced the idea of creating an opportunity for young people in West Africa to access education and sports, leading to the inception of Kalabash Academy.

The Birth of Kalabash Academy

Kalabash Academy was born out of Foday's desire to help children in West Africa navigate their paths toward success, much like he did. The academy combines sports and education, providing a holistic approach to development. Soccer serves as a gateway for many children, encouraging them to pursue their education while cultivating their talents on the field.

The academy started with its first class in 2018, welcoming children aged 10 to 11. Fast forward to today, and many of these students are now graduating and preparing for their future endeavors. The program has demonstrated that with the right guidance, mentorship, and resources, these young individuals can achieve their dreams.

Overcoming Challenges: The Hurdles of Establishing an Academy

Establishing Kalabash Academy was not without its challenges. Foday faced numerous hurdles, from political and cultural obstacles to logistical issues in running the academy. The key to overcoming these challenges was having a strong ‘why’ a purpose that fueled his determination to succeed despite the odds.

One significant hurdle was conveying his vision to the community and stakeholders. Foday's clarity of purpose allowed him to navigate these complexities effectively, eventually leading to a growing understanding and support for the academy's mission. The proof of his success is now evident, as the first graduating class exemplifies the potential of the program.

The Importance of Infrastructure in Youth Development

One of the key challenges Foday encountered was the lack of proper infrastructure for soccer training in the region. Many children practiced on rocky, uneven fields, inhibiting their development as athletes. Foday recognized that providing a safe, high-quality playing surface was crucial for the children's growth both on and off the field. As he put it, "Talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not." Kalabash Academy aims to create that opportunity by providing the necessary resources for development.

A connection through Michigan State's Dr. John 'Trey' Rogers led Foday to Pure Seed, where together they are helping build one of the best grass surfaces in the entire country. In partnership with organizations like Pure Seed, Foday is working to ensure that children have access to quality playing surfaces, which are essential for both skill development and injury prevention. By creating an environment conducive to learning and growth, Kalabash Academy is paving the way for a brighter future for its students.
